Introducing You To International Trade

Louisiana’s level of exports and imports have been running at an all-time high in recent years. Although the current slowdown in the U.S. and global economy may cause changes in this trend, certain international markets and sources of supply will still offer Louisiana companies numerous opportunities for their goods and services. Additionally, south Louisiana will continue to have high demand for construction equipment, building materials, and other construction-related products and services needed for the rebuilding of the region's infrastructure and economic development.

Have you been thinking about getting involved in the global marketplace but feel intimidated or wondering where and how to start? Do terms like FOB, CIF, letters of credit, bills of lading, and proforma invoices confuse you? How do the value of the dollar and the current worldwide credit crunch impact your prospects? How do free trade agreements with other countries affect your business? Well, wait no longer -- now is a great time to start learning what it takes to export and import.

The purpose of this introductory workshop is to walk you through the fundamentals of an international transaction, to give you an overview of the basic export-import process, and to provide you with the confidence and comfort level to demonstrate that it’s not as daunting as you may think to succeed in international trade.

What Comes Afterwards?

If you like what you hear at the October 24 luncheon workshop, then you can learn more about this exciting and profitable process by taking the next step and signing up for a package of four 4˝-hour afternoon seminars to be held on November 10, 12, 17, and 19 from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the World Trade Center.  In those seminars, you will learn step-by-step the “how-to” of international market research, preparing products for export & import, pricing strategies, terms of sale & quotations, export & import documentation, export shipping & import entry procedures, trade financing, and -- the bottom line -- methods of payment. For more information on this 4-seminar series, e-mail rchavarri@lsbdc.org or call
