Global opportunities in commerce, and the capacity for rapid
travel around the globe, have resulted in rapid increases in the
number of persons traveling internationally for business purposes.
At the same time, adventure travel to remote and exotic destinations
has become a mainstream part of the tourism industry. However,
exotic destinations present exotic challenges to the health of the
traveler. Studies show that some 50% of travelers will suffer at
least one health problem while traveling for a month in a
less-developed country.
The field of "travel medicine" has become a
recognized area of special knowledge, and the travel medicine
specialist can provide invaluable advice as well as specific
preventative measure such as medications and immunizations to reduce
the chance of illness while abroad.
The purpose of this program is to review some of the basic
health considerations for international travel and to demonstrate
how appropriate pre-travel preparation can reduce the risk of both
minor interruptions and major tragedy while overseas, whether for
business or pleasure.
Dr. Susan McLellan earned her undergraduate degree from
Princeton University, a Masters in Public Health from the University
of California School of Public Health in Berkeley, and an M.D. from
Tulane School of Medicine. She is currently an Associate Professor
of Medicine with the Infectious Diseases Section at Tulane’s
School of Medicine; and Clinical Assistant Professor with the
Department of Tropical Medicine at the Tulane University School of
Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
