that the U.S Government imposes on companies to ensure compliance
with all import requirements are exacting. This session will help
attendees develop a thorough understanding of the major areas of
concern under the Customs laws.
- The role of the Customs Broker
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) who does what now
- Relationship with other government agencies with oversight on
imports
- Customs entry procedures, requirements, and documentation
- Key importer responsibilities: Classification, Valuation,
Country of Origin, Marking, and Recordkeeping
"IMPROVING YOUR CUSTOMS COMPLIANCE
A STEP-BY-STEP REVIEW"

The Customs Modernization Act continues to redefine the
relationship between Customs and the import community. Whether the
issue involves revised focus assessment and inspection procedures or
the day-to-day mandate of "reasonable care," importers are
increasingly scrutinized for their compliance with all import
requirements.
- Importer-Customs shared responsibilities
- Keys to a successful compliance program
- How to prepare for and survive a Customs audit
- Compliance with the new Free Trade Agreements (Singapore,
Chile, Australia, CAFTA also NAFTA)
- What is CTPAT (Customs & Trade Partnership Against
Terrorism) and why companies should consider participating
- FDA Bio-Terrorism Act requirements
- Voluntary Customs disclosure program on infractions
- Government penalties and enforcement
Donna L. Bade is an attorney in the Chicago office of
Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg. Ms. Bades practice is focused on
Trade Regulation and Customs Law, Import & Export Trade Law,
Regulatory Law and Transportation Law. Ms. Bade is a licensed
customs broker and spent many years working as a customs broker and
freight forwarder in Detroit, St. Louis and Chicago prior to
attending law school. She has lectured extensively on issues
pertaining to Import and Export Law and Procedures, and has several
publications on related topics. Ms. Bade has taught an LLM class in
Import and Export Trade Law as adjunct professor at The John
Marshall Law School. She currently serves on the Board of Advisors
for the LLM Program. Ms. Bade is a member of the Illinois Bar
Association, the American Bar Association, the American Society of
International Law, the Court of International Trade Bar Association,
and the Chicago Bar Association. She is a past president and
director of the Chicago Customs Brokers & Freight Forwarders
Association. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Hope College
and her J.D. and L.L.M in International Business and Trade from The
John Marshall Law School.
