"CLEARING YOUR IMPORTS THROUGH CUSTOMS – A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH"
(Morning Session: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon) - 3 CLE credits

Whether you are a first-time or active importer, the obligations that the U.S Government imposes on companies to ensure compliance with all import requirements are exacting. This session will help attendees develop a thorough understanding of the major areas of concern under the Customs laws.

  • The role of the Customs Broker
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) – who does what now
  • Relationship with other government agencies with oversight on imports
  • Customs entry procedures, requirements, and documentation
  • Key importer responsibilities: Classification, Valuation, Country of Origin, Marking, and Recordkeeping

"IMPROVING YOUR CUSTOMS COMPLIANCE – A STEP-BY-STEP REVIEW"
(Afternoon Session: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.) - 3 CLE credits

The Customs Modernization Act continues to redefine the relationship between Customs and the import community. Whether the issue involves revised focus assessment and inspection procedures or the day-to-day mandate of "reasonable care," importers are increasingly scrutinized for their compliance with all import requirements.

  • Importer-Customs shared responsibilities
  • Keys to a successful compliance program
  • How to prepare for and survive a Customs audit
  • Compliance with the new Free Trade Agreements (Singapore, Chile, Australia, CAFTA – also NAFTA)
  • What is CTPAT (Customs & Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) and why companies should consider participating
  • FDA Bio-Terrorism Act requirements
  • Voluntary Customs disclosure program on infractions
  • Government penalties and enforcement
