Petros Galaktopoulos

During the 1960s, at the age of 17, Petros Galaktopoulos appeared for the first time on the Greek wrestling scene, and has since been regarded as a formidable opponent worldwide, as well as one of the most distinguished athletes in Greece’s history of sports. He has competed not only in Panhellenic, European and World Championships, but also in several Olympiads. In total, his career has been decorated with 17 medals. In the Olympic Games of 1968 in Mexico, he shocked the world when as the underdog, he began to beat favored athletes and brought home the bronze medal for Greece. In 1972, in the Olympic Games in Monaco, he added a silver medal to his accomplishments.

Hara Karyami

Hara Karyami began her career in gymnastics at the age of 5 in 1988. Over the years she competed on the Panhellenic, European, World Championship and Olympic levels, winning a total of 5 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 1 bronze medal, individually as well as a member of the Greek National Team. Her most distinctive achievement was participating in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and assisting her team in winning the bronze medal in rhythmic gymnastics.

Eva Christodoulou

Eva Christodoulou was born in 1983 and at the age of 5 took her first steps in rhythmic gymnastics. She started to compete on a Panhellenic level at the age of 8. In the summer of 1995 she became a member of the Greek National Team, competing in the team sport of Ensemble. In time, she and the National Team went on to compete in the European competition in Budapest, Hungary and won 3 gold medals. Her next goal was to compete with the National Team in Osaka, Japan, and not only did she compete, but Eva Christodoulou, along with the rest of her team, won two gold medals and one silver medal. This achievement in rhythmic gymnastics led her to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia at the age of 16, where she won the bronze medal, proudly placing the Greek flag among the 3 best countries in the world.

The Olympic Games Return Home

Greece is where so much began - democracy started there - the Olympics were first held in Greece - much of the philosophy, mythology and folklore we all so often quote first saw the light of day there. The 2004 Olympic Games will be hosted in the very heart of Greek culture, Athens, the city of the Acropolis and the Parthenon.

As the cradle of Western culture, Greece has been one of the most explored European countries for thousands of years. However, it is not just the lure of history and its cultural heritage that brings foreign travelers to Greece. Greece is a mountainous land with rugged terrain, sandy beaches, lagoons, inlets, reefs and beautiful islands.

Greece’s fascinating history and beauty is waiting for you in this extraordinary country: Olympia, site of the original Olympic Games; Delphi, famous for its Oracle; Mycenae, once richly laden with gold, and Epidaurus, where you can experience the marvelous acoustics of a 14,000 seat, open air theater; the enchanting Greek Islands of picturesque Mykonos; Santorini, regarded as possibly the lost island of Atlantis; legendary Crete, as well as Rhodes, where the Colossus once stood guard.

In 2004, the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad will return home to Greece, the country that gave birth to the Ancient Olympic Games over 2,700 years ago, and the country where the modern Olympic Games were revived in 1896. The Athens 2004 Olympic Games will combine history, culture and peace with sports and Olympism. Athens, the birthplace of the modern games, will provide the perfect setting for the biggest and greatest sporting event in the world as athletes and sports enthusiast from all over the globe gather to celebrate this unique event

Athens 2004 Olympic Games will focus on three primary Olympic areas - Athen Olympic Sports Complex (AOSC), Faliro Coastal Zone Complex (FOSC), and Helliniko Olympic Complex (HoSC). Of the 28 sports on the Olympic Games program, 17 will be conducted in these three areas.
