| On October 1 the Australian Ambassador to the United States, Dennis
Richardson, officially opened the new Gulf Coast District Trade Office of
the Australian Trade Commission, located in the World Trade Center in New
Orleans. The manager of the office is Bryan Wallace, who can be reached at
(504) 220-3483 or via e-mail at
Bryan.Wallace@Austrade.gov.au.
The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) is the Australian Government’s
international business development agency with representation in over 60
countries, including 19 locations across the United States. The New Orleans
opening attracted a high-profile audience of business and government
representatives from both countries, including Mayor Ray Nagin, City Council
President Arnie Fielkow, Deputy Secretary of Louisiana Economic Development
Fran Gladden, members of the Consular Corps, and others.
Ambassador Richardson stated that the new Gulf Coast Trade Office will
further extend the Australian Government’s ability to promote the growing
trade and investment links between Australia and Louisiana. “This new Trade
Office is the first international trade representation by a foreign
government to be opened in New Orleans in 30 years and it illustrates the
importance the Australian Government places on commercial ties with the Gulf
Coast region,” he said.
Ambassador Richardson further stated that “Australia and the United
States have enjoyed a strong trade relationship over many years, with
Australia now the eighth largest source of foreign direct investment in the
U.S. The deep and enduring nature of our commercial relationship was given
tangible form when both countries agreed on the establishment of the
Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement, which came into force on
January 1, 2005.”
Australian companies have a long track record of trade and investment
activity across the Gulf Coast region, with strong capabilities and product
offerings in areas such as: oil and gas, infrastructure, construction,
building products, and boat building. Following the devastation of
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Australian businesses were among the most
active of any foreign companies in investing in the recovery.

| On Friday, November 2, the World Trade Center, the Americas Society, the
Council of the Americas, the City of New Orleans, and other organizations
will hold a luncheon program at the WTC’s Plimsoll Club on “Immigration and
Integration: The Challenge for the Private Sector.” The featured speaker
will be Christopher Sabatini, Senior Director for Policy with the Americas
Society/Council of the Americas in New York (AS/COA) and Editor-in-Chief of
Americas Quarterly.
Last month the Americas Society received a grant from the Rockefeller
Foundation to work with business leaders in three key U.S. cities, including
New Orleans, to promote private and public sector initiatives to support the
integration of immigrant communities.
The AS/COA will work with business leaders to catalogue and showcase
initiatives that promote immigrant integration and adjustment while building
broad support for the expansion of these activities. The project will
convene national and local business leaders and engage public sector
officials and community-based organizations in Atlanta, New Orleans and New
York.
Through research, site visits and information exchanges, the initiative
will identify successful examples of private sector programs such as:
English language classes, skills training opportunities, assistance in
documentation, tools to build financial literacy, and access to credit and
the housing market. Examples and best practices will draw from national
activities, but the primary focus will be on those in Atlanta, New Orleans,
and New York.
This initiative will not advocate or weigh in on the ongoing national
debate on immigration reform. Instead, it will focus on the integration of
documented immigrants already in the United States. Periodic working papers
and a final report detailing the depth and breadth of recent immigration,
the economic and social benefits of immigrant worker integration, and best
practices in facilitating integration will be shared with media,
policymakers, business leaders, and U.S. presidential candidates.
The Americas Society (AS) is the premier forum dedicated to education,
debate and dialogue in the Americas. The Council of the Americas (COA) is
the premier international business organization whose members share a common
commitment to economic and social development, open markets, the rule of
law, and democracy throughout the Western Hemisphere. The Council’s
membership consists of leading international companies representing a broad
spectrum of sectors, including banking and finance, consulting services,
consumer products, energy and mining, manufacturing, media, technology, and
transportation.
To register for the November 2 luncheon program, call the WTCA at (504)
529-1601, ext. 222, or click
